Marcus Freeman and James Franklin will be the first Black head coach to lead a team into an FBS national championship game for the first time ever this season .

Franklin , who has coached at Penn State for a decade now, told HBO 24/7 he wanted to achieve what no one else has.

Freeman was just 12 years old when John Thompson became the first black coach to win a men's basketball team to a Division I national title in 1984 .

Since 2007 , the sport has grown from seven Black head coaches in FBS to 16 — a significant increase.

Until the percentage of players is equal to the coaches, we'll still see work that must be done.

"I take a lot of pride in it. I'm honored to be able to compete against Notre Dame ," Freeman says.
