President Donald Trump pardoned nearly all defendants convicted of participating in the 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol .

“We’re looking at the future, not the past,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune said after pardoning violent rioters.

Republicans have long claimed that the rioters were either liberal provocateurs, FBI agents or confidential human sources acting in a conspiracy to make the riot worse.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) said the pardons sent the wrong signal to people who want to assault law enforcement or elected officials.

Republicans are prioritizing confirming Trump ’s Cabinet this week and making more progress on his legislative agenda.

Democrats criticized the GOP for largely going mute as Trump pardons the people who committed an attack on Congress .
