Ross Ulbricht created the Silk Road , the world’s first dark-web drug market, in 2011 .

He was convicted on seven charges relating to the distribution of narcotics, money laundering, and computer hacking.

In 2015 , he was sentenced to life in prison, a punishment beyond even the 20-plus years prosecutors in the case requested.

President Trump pardoned Ulbrachicht on Tuesday evening , misspelling his last name.

Ulbricht has become an exemplar of over-sentencing among some advocates of criminal justice reform.

He never fully acknowledged the harm inflicted by the Silk Road’s drug sales and still shows little remorse for his actions.

Ross has served more than enough time. He has been a model prisoner. He poses zero safety risk to the community,” Alice Johnson , CEO of the justice reform foundation Taking Action for Good said in November .
