The White House fired independent inspectors general of at least 12 major federal agencies.

The firings could clear the way for President Donald Trump to install loyalists in the crucial role of identifying fraud, waste and abuse in the government.

The dismissals appeared to violate federal law, which requires Congress to receive 30 days ’ notice of any intent to fire a Senate -confirmed inspector general.

Interior Department inspector general Mark Greenblatt , a Trump appointee at the Interior Department , was fired Friday .

He released a lengthy investigation in 2021 concluding that when the Park Police led law enforcement officers into a crowd of protesters outside Lafayette Square during the first Trump administration, they did so as part of a plan to build a fence around the park.

That report was largely viewed as exonerating Trump , who came under heavy criticism after the incident.
