President Donald Trump signed an executive order initiating the U.S. withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) The WHO operates through collaboration among its 194 member nations, which collectively determine global health priorities and coordinate responses to health crises.

It's a radical approach to leave WHO and cut its funding, and halting foreign aid overnight .

The U.S. currently provides about 20 percent of all WHO funding.

The loss of that funding will affect all of WHO 's major program areas including AIDS, TB and malaria, polio eradication, and responding to health emergencies.

Germany and the U.K. might fill the funding void, but gaps in global health intelligence and rapid risk assessment could arise.
