Two massive canyons likely formed 3.8 billion years ago on the moon in a span of less than 10 minutes .

The formations are hidden on the far side of the moon near the lunar south pole.

Future missions could visit the Schrödinger impact basin and take rock samples to help scientists better understand the origins and history of the lunar moon .

The Schrödinger crater is similar in many regards to the dino-killing Chicxulub crater on Earth .

The energy of the blasts was about 130 times more destructive than the energy in the worldwide stockpile of nuclear weapons, according to the study.

The crater is within a few hundred kilometers of the moon’s oldest and largest impact basin, the South PoleAitken basin.
