Psychologists have shown that humans have a natural preference for the middle choice.
This means making a dash for the toilets at the far end of the row could help you avoid unpleasant surprises left by the previous occupants.
A researcher from Loughborough University says flushing generates rapid, turbulent water movement in the toilet bowl that aerosolizes droplets containing bacteria from faecal matter and other contaminants.
These aerosols are at their most concentrated in the first five minutes after flushing.
When a toilet is used too frequently without cleaning in between, this can lead to 'significant accumulation and survival of bacterial bioaerosols' In addition to choosing the least popular stall, you can also try and avoid features which encourage the buildup.
