Brazilian government banned most tree cutting in the country's Atlantic Forest region in 2006 .
Researchers monitored satellite images to find out if the new law was working to prevent further forest loss.
They found that the biggest loss was in Bahia , accounting for almost half of the deforested land.
Much of the land had been converted to growing eucalyptus, converted to coal for use in power stations.
