It was actually gopher number three but it was the first one I managed to get a picture of. I have been keeping an eye out for gophers — Richardson ’s ground squirrels — for a few weeks now.

When I’d last been down this way a couple weeks before, all was white. Had a gopher been up and running around it would have been easy to spot. Now, though, with their tawny fur and small size, they would just blend in. The only snow was a long drift on the east side of Willow Creek down by Stavely.

A year ago it had been nearly dry.

Spring and early summer rains had replenished it but I was wondering if the winter had allowed it to drain again.

The Oldman River valley was wide open below the dam and the gnarly cottonwoods were howling in the wind.

The landscape around the colony’s west ranch is stunning.
