B-45 Tornado: America’s First Jet Bomber

The B45 Tornado was produced by North American aviation, but the war ended before the prototype was tested in combat.
It was the first jet bomber to engine service with the US Air Force and the first capable of carrying a nuclear weapon.
The Arado AR234 Blitz was the world's first jet powered bomber, the first to be shot down by a jet fighter.
The B45 flew for the first time at the North American facilities in Inglewood , CA in March of 1947 .
The aircraft was powered by 4 General Electric J47 engines that provided 6000 lbs of thrust.
It could reach speeds of up to 570 mph with an estimated range of 1000 miles and a service ceiling of 37,500 feet .
As a light bomber, the B45 only packed 250 caliber machine guns in its tail.
