Scrapping carbon tax might make life more unaffordable, advocates say

60% Informative
B.C. 's consumer carbon tax is meant to make life more affordable for low- to middle-income British Columbians .
Poverty reduction advocates say it will bring about the end of the climate action tax credit.
Without the credit, many will struggle to afford the bare essentials such as food and rent.
The credit has been around for over 15 years , ever since the province introduced Canada ’s first price on carbon.
At the same time, we must recognize that British Columbians are being squeezed by global inflation and high interest rates.
Alex Hemingway , senior economist at the B.C. Society for Policy Solutions , said it’s “a shame” to see good policy get undermined by political talking points.
He agreed that scrapping the tax will ultimately lead to an increase in the cost of living for low-income people.
