A judge has ordered the reinstatement of some fired federal employees, at least temporarily, but their jobs are still on the line.

The Trump administration has attempted to terminate hundreds of employees from the CDC alone, along with hundreds more workers at the National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies with a U.S. health and safety role.

Many public health and science researchers are concerned about the cuts’ impacts on the nation’s ability to respond to threats.

Emory University epidemiology professor Patrick Sullivan worked at the CDC for about 15 years .

Sullivan says progress in HIV treatment and prevention are a great example of the importance of federal support for public health work.

He says to have scientific tools without adequate public health staff or funding to use them will cost American lives.
