Decoding a medieval mystery manuscript

The Pearl-Manuscript contains the earliest versions of the masterly medieval poem " Pearl " and "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight " MIT professor Arthur Bahr has written a new book on the manuscript.

He says the book is its own work of art, with bespoke illustrations and the skilled use of parchment.

"The act of touching the Pearl-Manuscript really changed how I think this poem would have worked for the medieval reader," Bahr says.

Bahr: "Materiality matters. Screens are enabling, and without the digital facsimile I could not have written this book" Two MIT students helped Bahr make the project through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program .
