Chewing gum typically contains synthetic or natural polymers for better texture, elasticity and flavor retention.

Researchers found chewing just one piece of gum can release hundreds to thousands of microplastics into saliva.

Microplastics are fragments of polymers that range in size from less than 0.2 inch ( 5 millimeters) to 1/25,000th of an inch ( 1 micrometer).

“Gum is safe to enjoy as it has been for more than 100 years ,” the National Confectioners Association says.

The average size of gum microplastics was 82.6 micrometers — think the thickness of paper, or the diameter of some human hairs.

“We inhale, ingest and drink something like 250,000 plastic particles a year without trying.”.
