17% of respondents to Stonewall 's survey said they'd experienced physical assault, 12% had pseudo-scientific counselling sessions and 10% had experienced exorcisms.

Draft legislation to outlaw conversion practices due to be published within next month .

Stonewall said research showed a ban needed to be brought in "as quickly as possible" The proposed ban will need to balance rights of those subject to conversion practices with other human rights protections, such as religious freedom and freedom of expression.

A government spokesperson said: "We remain committed to bringing forward legislation to finally ban these abusive practices".
