Six South Dakota lawmakers celebrated bipartisan accomplishments at an annual democracy conference.

They highlighted efforts to stop what one legislator called an influx of “bad bills” from reaching the governor’s desk.

Fourteen incumbent Republican lawmakers lost in the 2024 primaries, leading Democrats and some Republicans to work together against legislation they both opposed.

Republicans outnumber Democrats in the Legislature 96-9.

Odenbach said the next session will be different as freshman lawmakers have a year under their belts and a better understanding of the legislative process.

“The South Dakota Republican Party is changing,” he said. “It’s going back to its roots and we’re going to redefine what it means to be a conservative.”.
