Justin Welby: Former Archbishop of Canterbury forgives serial abuser John Smyth

78% Informative
Justin Welby says forgiveness of John Smyth is "irrelevant" and it's important to help victims rebuild lives.
Smyth attacked more than 100 boys and young men in the UK and Africa over decades .
He never faced justice in UK or abroad before he died, aged 77 , in 2018 .
A damning 2024 review found Welby "could and should" have done more to bring Smyth to justice.
Welby said he feels a "deep sense of personal failure" over handling of Smyth .
Archbishop said he is "entirely in favour" of independent safeguarding but could not convince the Synod to adopt it.
Asked whether a split could lead to a split, Welby said: "I can see it happening. I think it would be a total tragedy" He said generating social cohesion is the country's "biggest challenge".
