The Hohle Fels bird sculpture is the oldest depiction of a bird anywhere in the world.

It is carved from mammoth ivory and is 1.85 inches ( 4.7 centimeters ) It is believed to be a water bird such as a diver, cormorant or duck.

Archaeologists excavated the cave in Baden-Württemberg , Germany , in 2001 and 2002 .
