A dramatic drop in local Code Black events highlights a series of improvements for the Windsor-Essex Emergency Medical Services in 2024 .
The number of minutes local ambulance crews spent in Code Black dropped 79 per cent last year — to 358 from 1,701 in 2023 .
Code Reds , which occur when only one to three ambulances are available, dropped 30 per cent , to 6,231 minutes in 2024 ; and Code Yellows dropped four per cent .
The service also saw a 7.3 per cent drop in offload delays.
A reduction in Code 3 impacts ambulance deployment because low-acuity calls tend to take longer to offload at the hospital.
The service will be moving to a new triage system being deployed provincewide called Medical Priority Dispatch .
The MPDS helps prioritize and triage 911 calls so paramedics can be dispatched sooner.
