The Compassionate Intervention Act would be the first of its kind in Canada if enacted.
It would allow Alberta to force drug addicts into secure facilities for up to three months .
In B.C. , the NDP government has proposed legislation for involuntary treatment several times, but has never acted on it.
“This is an evolving process,” Eby said Thursday at a new treatment facility in Surrey for dealing with some of the worst cases of drug addiction. “We may need to introduce additional legislation here,” he told reporters. “We’ll watch carefully to see what Alberta does.” In the past, Eby hasn’t sounded as accepting of Alberta ’s tougher approach toward intervention and treatment of drug addiction. The shift is overdue, but welcome nevertheless..
