There are about 13 million dogs in the UK and 90 million in the US .
The average dog has a mental age of between two and two-and-a-half years, says Coren .
Coren adapted tests used for human infants to research dogs’ language-learning abilities.

Dogs can tell you’re upset with them, but wolves don’t have that response.
Some dogs may not like certain other dogs because they don’t want them to be part of their group.
They may view them as undesirable in some way.
Some dogs are capable of goal-directed behaviour, says Mills.
What makes dogs happy? “Being with you,” says Woods.
