MailOnline has scoured historical records and dictionaries to find more than 40 words that once had a very different definition.

The list includes 'fudge', 'garbage', 'pink', 'stripe', 'flirt' and 'artificial' among others.

Linguistics professor Lynne Cahill said some words change their meanings because 'there are lots of things going on'.

'Broadcast' used to refer to sowing seeds in a field by casting them about.

It was later adopted for describing the widespread distribution of information by print paving the way for its common meaning today for radio and TV.

'Pen' is a good example of a word evolving as a sign of the times, taking on a new meaning.
