The Phony Physics of Star Wars Are a Blast

Today is Star Wars Day, and I'm a huge fan of the first movie.

There are things in there that look like science, but I don't think they need to be fixed.

A more realistic Star Wars would probably be boring.

Sound waves need some kind of medium to “wave” in space, but in space there's nothing.

A laser beam is light, and we know the speed of light: 3 x 108 meters per second .

If an X-wing shot a laser at a TIE fighter that was 1 km away, it would take just 3 millionths of a second to hit the target.

The only way you could see it is if there’s something in the path of the beam that reflects light into your eye.
