Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Matthew Shoemaker is calling for the province to ban financial incentives for doctors recruitment.

Shoemaker said his city needs 40 more doctors, including 18 to practise family medicine, and while it does offer a moving allowance of up to $10,000 , it is not in a position to compete with municipalities offering doctors tens of thousands of dollars.

About 525,000 Ontarians who live in rural areas have no access to primary care.

That number is increasing four times faster compared to urban centres.

In northern communities, more than 350 doctors — including more than 200 family physicians — are needed to fill current vacancies.

Rural Ontario Municipalities Association estimates Ontario municipalities are spending nearly half a billion dollars on health care annually .
