The prairie around Wolf Lake is surrounded by drought-resistant prairie and all the plants, birds and animals that depend on that resiliency.

Wolf Lake lies at the north end of the long coulee that houses the Crawling Valley Reservoir a ways further to the south.

There were horned larks and their meadowlark cousins everywhere and colourful visitors like chestnut-collared longspurs.

This is pure prairie country, barely a patch of broken land anywhere.

The usual cast of characters was there, noisy geese — some with babies already — quacking mallards, rasping yellow-headed blackbirds and redwings hollering everywhere.

There were scaup and teal, goldeneyes and shovelers, pintails and wigeons.

The prairies — and watercourses like Berry Creek — are every bit as precious as the mountains and forests.

They need to be respected and protected, especially from things that are so completely under our control.

Those fish should never have been anywhere near there. They should never even have been on this continent. And there’s very little can be done now that they are there..
