68% Informative
Labour ministers are thought to be considering using a new Home Guard’ of volunteers to boost security at critical infrastructure sites including nuclear power stations, airports and telecommunications hubs.
Military and security experts gave the idea a cautious welcome but told The i Paper that a new civilian force should not be a “substitute” for a boost in defence spending.
Simon Diggins , defence and security analyst, said a new Home Guard was not a bad idea’ But the former British Army officer wanted to see the SRD to make sure it wasn’t a substitute for an increase in defence spending.
My concern is this becomes a flag-waving exercise, a distraction,” he said.
