Violence erupted last year between rival factions, plunging the region into unprecedented violence.
The sanctuary has been hit by armed attacks, death threats and cutoff from essential supplies.
"We've never seen violence this extreme," the sanctuary's president says.
The Ostok Sanctuary in Culiacan , Sinaloa , Mexico , has been forced from its care by cartel violence.
One of the two elephants injured in March , Bireki , injured her foot, and no one would brave the trip to the area.
"We can't risk this happening again. If we don't leave, who will treat them?" the sanctuary says.
