Malawi's response to Cyclone Freddy offers lessons in managing disasters: First up, don't leave people in the lurch

In February 2023 , Cyclone Freddy struck Malawi , causing floods and mudslides that killed more than 1,200 people and displaced 659,000 .
Since 2019 , Malawi has declared several national disasters, creating a sense of a permanent state of emergency.
Malawi's Department of Disaster Management Affairs coordinated the disaster response.
But after Freddy , there was a descent into chaos, says political economy specialist Tione Mumbo Thindwa .
There's no one-size-fits-all disaster response for a world affected by climate-related disasters.
