Zimbabwe bowler Richard Ngarava had to be helped from the field with a back injury on day one of the one -off Test against England at Trent Bridge .

While an injured player can be replaced in the field, the replacement cannot bat or bowl.

Substitutes were introduced to one-day internationals in 2005 but were scrapped in 2006 .

Cricket's Laws state the umpires can allow a substitute if a player has been injured or become ill and that this occurred during the match.

If a fast bowler is going for a few runs, why not replace them with a spinner? Alison Mitchell says someone has to come up with a system where the system cannot be abused.

Simon Mann says it is an anomaly that you can't have a substitution in Test cricket.

Stephan Shemilt says any idea of injury replacements comes with potential for abuse.
