Scientists at MIT have discovered a material that conducts electricity without resistance while simultaneously acting as a magnet.
This “chiral superconductor” was found hiding in ordinary graphite, the same carbon-based material used in pencil lead.
The discovery overturns decades of established physics.
Material maintains superconductivity up to 300 millikelvin temperature while maintaining magnetic properties.
Majorana fermions, if they exist in this material, could store quantum information in a way that’s naturally protected from such disturbances.
The MIT team observed identical behavior across six different samples.
Could the next quantum computing breakthrough come from something as mundane as pencil lead?.
