California Gov. Gavin Newsom to sue Trump over National Guard deployment

NEW: California Gov. Gavin Newsom says he plans to file a lawsuit against President Donald Trump over the National Guard deployment.

NEW: Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell says officers were “overwhelmed” by the remaining protesters.

The National Guard was deployed specifically to protect federal buildings, including the downtown detention center where protesters concentrated.

At least four Waymo cars set on fire, sending large plumes of black smoke into the sky and exploding intermittently.

The arrival of the National Guard follows two days of protests that began Friday in downtown Los Angeles .

Trump invoked a legal provision allowing him to deploy federal service members when there is “a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States ”.
