The Finnish Immigration Service has cancelled his work-based residence permit because his passport has expired.

To get a new passport Mikael would have to travel to Russia , but if he did that he could be forced to join the army .

He appealed the decision in the administrative court, but his case was rejected.

Mikael 's situation is one example of how difficult it can be for immigrants to stay on top of the details hidden in ever-changing rules. At the moment his deportation date is set for late June , but Mikael hopes that it might be delayed. He admits, however, that he is starting to feel a little hopeless. "It is difficult to believe that I might be able to do anything now," says Mikael . "It looks like whatever door I knock on is slammed shut from the other side.".
