Scottish government bans "black bag" waste from being buried in landfill from 31 December .

Ban covers biodegradable municipal waste, wood, textiles, paper and food.

Ban was originally meant to be in place by 2021 but was delayed because of the Covid pandemic and concerns businesses were not ready.

More waste is already being sent to incinerators, but not enough of them will be ready by 31 December deadline.

Scottish government points to a range of initiatives it has launched in recent years to tackle household waste.

These include bans on single use vapes, forthcoming charges on disposable cups and a planned deposit-return scheme for cans and plastic bottles.

It said the "vast majority" of councils had alternative measures in place ahead of landfill ban.
