The Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) was shaping up to be the year Congress regulated how kids engage with social media.
Now, after a hundred chaotic days of the Trump administration, the once-rational bet of new child safety legislation is looking shakier.
KOSA would enshrine a responsibility for tech platforms to design their products in ways that would mitigate the risk of kids using them.
Some version of KOSA, KOSMA, or the Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0) will pass during this session of Congress.
Many states have passed a broad array of child safety laws, and many of these have been at least temporarily blocked by lawsuits.
A new problem has emerged under Trump, though: slash-and-burn attacks on consumer protection agencies.

The Asus Vivobook Pro 15 is a more affordable take on a creator laptop like the MacBook Pro.
Despite a good amount of power under the hood, this Asus machine has some quirks, like the dated 16:9 aspect ratio screen and lackluster battery life.
The display is one of the laptop's greatest strengths, thanks to its 2,880 x 1,620-pixel resolution.
The Vivobook Pro 15 costs $1,500, but it's slightly too expensive in my book.
A discrete GPU means the laptop offers some solid gaming performance, even if that’s not the main purpose of this laptop.
The OLED display is excellent, and the performance is solid, but if you're trying to save a buck, there are cheaper laptops that offer similar performance.
