U.S. biotech company Nucleus Genomics has announced new in vitro fertilization (IVF) software that allows couples to choose which of up to 20 embryos to implant into the woman’s uterus by looking at embryos’ complete genetic profiles.
The product joins a $5.7 billion fertility industry estimated to be worth $5 billion in 2024 .
Frida Ghitis: Those who pay to use IVF haven’t really gained control; they’ve allowed others to have control over them and reproduction of future generations of children.
She says IVF eugenics technology take on lives of their own, even to the surprise of their creators.
Ghitis says treatment of embryos as humans is at odds with efforts to expand access to IVF and lower its cost.
Jonah Apel: The future of eugenics technologies is a more political question than whether people should have access to IVF .
He says lawmakers should decide whether to expand the industry at taxpayers' expense.
Each advance leaves man weaker as well as stronger, he writes.
